How do you play? The target is to get your BOWLS as close as possible to the JACK (little white or yellow ball). The challenge is that the bowls naturally curve, so you need to aim right or left and then roll the bowls with just the right amount of force to get them to stop close to the jack. Play the curve like putting on a slope in golf. Embrace the challenge. Easy to learn. A lifetime to enjoy.
Key Elements:
Bowls: Hard resin balls that are not perfectly round, but biased (heavier on one side), causing them to curve as they roll.
Jack: A small white or yellow target ball that players aim for.
Green: The playing surface, typically a meticulously maintained, flat grassy area. It could be real turf or artificial.
Mat: A mat players stand on to deliver their bowls.
End: One complete round of play where players bowl all their bowls in one direction towards the jack.
How many on a team? You can play games of singles, pairs, triples, even four on a team if you want. In team games, one player is designated the skip like in curling.
How it's played (basic) 1. The "lead" position rolls the jack to a specific distance down the green.
2. Players then take turns rolling their bowls towards the jack, trying to get them closer than the opponent's bowls.
3. After all bowls are rolled, the team with the most bowls closest to the jack scores points for each of those bowls.
4. Teams continue playing ends until a set score is reached or a predetermined number of ends are completed.
