Lawn bowling in Sun City (Menifee), CA, owes much of its early prominence to developer Del Webb. Inspired by his friend Walt Disney's love of the sport, Webb incorporated bowling greens into the community, paving the way for clubs that formed around 1960-1962. The first games were rolled on the new green in June, 1963, and club membership grew rapidly. Members did all the work in construction of a second green, which was completed in 1969.

The game's blend of strategy and accessibility made it a favorite, appealing to the communities focused on an active, social lifestyle.

The national organization, Bowls USA (originally American Lawn Bowls Association) published a periodical beginning in 1962. Clubs were invited to send items for publication and a lot of history can be gleaned from those articles. The text, publication date and page of reports by our club are included below.
